IWA Australia was founded in 1990 by a group of women led by Galila Abdelsalam, who recognised the need to bring Muslim women together to support one another. Originally established as the Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland (IWAQ), the organisation was incorporated in 1991. It received its first Settlement Grant in 1995/96, followed by funding for disability and aged care services in 1996/97. From this foundation, IWA Australia has continued to grow—securing grants, receiving recognition, and delivering quality support to culturally and linguistically diverse communities across Australia.

Today, the organisation operates as IWA Australia Ltd, with an expanded reach across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.

At its core, IWA Australia’s work is grounded in community. As a not-for-profit organisation supporting multicultural individuals and families, it is committed to creating safe, inclusive spaces where people feel understood, respected, and connected. With a deep understanding of the challenges associated with settling in a new country—navigating unfamiliar systems, maintaining cultural identity, and building a new life—its programs are designed to support individuals at every stage of their journey.

Settlement and Community Support
Through the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) program, IWA Australia supports newly arrived migrants and humanitarian entrants as they settle into life in Australia. Services include practical assistance, advocacy, and opportunities for social connection, with a focus on building confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging.

Aged Care Services
IWA Australia is dedicated to supporting older community members to remain connected and engaged. Through social support groups, culturally appropriate activities, and assistance navigating the aged care system, the organisation ensures seniors feel valued, respected, and supported.

NDIS and Disability Services
NDIS services are delivered to people of all ages in a way that respects culture, language, and lived experience. IWA Australia works closely with participants and their families to ensure they feel heard, comfortable, and supported in achieving their goals.

Domestic and Family Violence Support
IWA Australia provides a safe, culturally sensitive environment for women and children experiencing domestic and family violence, including access to a safe house. Its approach is centred on compassion, dignity, and empowerment, supporting individuals as they rebuild their safety and wellbeing.

Community Development and Wellbeing
Community connection is central to IWA Australia’s work. Through workshops, events, and community initiatives, the organisation creates opportunities to share knowledge, celebrate culture, and strengthen the resilience of the communities it serves.

Services are delivered across Brisbane Northside, Brisbane Southside, Logan, and Ipswich, with outreach support ensuring accessibility for communities where they are located.
